This Game Helps Your Kids With:
This game is good for kids who need help with completing an overwhelming task one bit at a time in a timely fashion, because they must:
- Guide one car at a time to the exit of the level. The levels are timed and players must use their prioritization skills to decide which car will be the easiest to guide. This must be done in a matter of seconds or lost time will cause players to fall behind.
Talking Points:
- When were you able to guide more than one car to the exit within the time limit?
- How did prioritizing (deciding which car to guide to the exit first, second, etc.) help you to guide more cars to the exit within the time limit?
- How is completing a level in “Acceleracers Track Mod” like completing all of your school assignments before the deadline?
Making it Real:
- Teach prioritization skills for test and exam taking. Directly instruct children in test-taking strategies. Teach them to answer all the questions to which they are certain of the answers prior to spending time on figuring out more difficult questions. Teach them how to construct very brief outlines in response to essay questions and how to maximize the amount of time that they will have to complete a test at school by strategies such as sitting towards the front of the class, having all materials ready and available upon receiving the test, and having a watch that can be used as a timer so that they are aware of how much time they have left to complete the test.
- Set reasonable time limits for tasks and then work to reduce these time limits. For example, set an expectation that children can unload the dishwasher or clear off the table within 15 minutes. Gradually decrease the amount of time and praise the children for efforts towards completing this task more efficiently. Ask your child to identify other areas in which he/she can become more efficient and then set progressive time limits on these tasks
