This Game Can Help Your Kids With Response Inhibition:
This game is good for kids who display difficulty with thinking before acting and attentiveness, because:
- It is almost always important for the player to consider their surroundings before acting. Sometimes the player can jump straight to a group of bolts without worrying about being bumped by an egg or a chick, while at other times it is important to wait for an egg or chick to move. Usually in situations like the latter, a child learns when the best time is to inhibit a particular action and they may need to ask themselves: “Should I act now, or would it be better for me to wait?”
Talking Points:
- What happens if an egg or chick hits your player?
- Why is it important to stop and think before making a move?
- How can having to think before you act help you to care properly for toys, books, or belongings?
Making it Real:
Provide a child with behavioral strategies that might help with delaying impulsive behaviors. These might include putting hands in front of mouth to prevent interrupting, sitting on hands as a reminder not to jump up yet or keeping hands in pockets to prevent pushing or shoving others. This Game Can Help Your Kids With Sustained Attention:
This game is good for kids who display difficulty with broadening their attention span so as to not be oblivious and narrowing their attention span so as to not be distracted by everything, because they must:
- Be able to concentrate on some things while ignoring others. Three eggs could be coming directly in the player’s direction while another sails above Wubbzy toward the other side of the screen. At the same time there could be baby chick-bots jumping back and forth a few inches away. Paying attention to more than the most crucial obstacles can result in confusion and a large loss of points. The player must be able to focus attention on the most important objects. On the other hand, there are times when the player is forced to be aware of many sources of information at once. For example, there could be two eggs and a baby chick-bot flying straight at Wubbzy. The player must be aware of the positions of all three items to be successful at avoiding them. In this circumstance, the child must attend to multiple sources of information while sustaining attention on all three.
Talking Points:
- What can sometimes happen if you get distracted while playing Wubbzy?
- Why is it important to try to pay attention to everything on the screen?
- How can paying attention to “Wubbzy’s Amazing Adventure” help you to play with dolls, blocks, or action figures for a long time?
Making it Real:
- Use competition to sustain attention. Challenge your child to see who can fully complete his/her task, for instance, the child’s homework and your task of putting the food away after shopping. Competition often serves to help children sustain their focus. If your child has a competitive nature, talk to him/her about coming up with his/her own strategies for competing against him/herself or others.
