Neurotechnologies

Neurotechnologies refer to scientifically-based technologies that are designed to enhance cognitive and emotional functioning. They range from technologies that utilize biofeedback and neurofeedback to specific computer programs that are designed to enhance working-memory skills. There has been in increasing interest in the development of neurotechnologies, particularly for enhancing the cognitive skills of the elderly and victims of strokes.

Neuroscientists have also developed a range of digital technologies to “exercise” children’s brains. Many of these are designed to address specific deficits observed in children with learning and attention problems. Research support for these programs varies. LearningWorks for Kids provides a brief description of popular technologies with which we have had direct experience. Where there is substantial research supporting a technology, such as Cogmed Working Memory Training, we offer recommendations.  LearningWorks for Kids guides and playbooks provide strategies that assist children in identifying their use of executive skills (detect) and help parents then to get their children to think about their use of executive functions with the technologies (reflect) in the real world (connect).

Specific technologies that are useful for supporting, practicing, and developing executive-functioning skills include:
